We know that motivating yourself to get some work done at home at this time of year can be really difficult. With busy periods of work, and study season looming for many of us, it’s important to never underestimate the importance of creating a comfortable, efficient work space. By building yourself a beautiful working environment with suitable lighting for the task in hand, you can drastically reduce stress and increase your productivity. Get to grips with task specific lighting design and style with confidence the next time you're looking for new lighting for your home.

Whether you're trying to catch up with work emails, or you're sat sketching out a plan for next months craft pieces in your free time, having the best lighting for whatever you need the space for is a great starting point for any home decor update. Task lighting is all about creating a positive and welcoming space for you to work in no matter what the season. Task lighting design is all about the lights you use to read, write, study and more. It's important to get the levels of lighting right in order to avoid eyestrain and keep focused on the job.

When it comes to task based lighting design, the main thing you want to do is make sure that while the light is bright enough to manage the task at hand, it doesn’t cause distracting glare. As a guide, your lighting should be bright enough to ensure that you can perform tasks like chopping vegetables without significant strain to your eyes.

Our Task Lighting Tips:

  • To avoid glare and too many shadows in the room, lighting should be located to the side of the task, not directly in front of it.
  • If you’re right-handed, place your lighting on the left side of your work area and vice-versa if you’re left-handed. This helps reduce the chance of shadows on your workspace and will make you feel confident in your work area.
  • To stop light shining in your own or anyone else’s eyes, adjust the lighting downwards, onto the task surface such as a document you are reading or the surface that you are working from.
  • Think in layers, not only is complimenting overhead lighting and table lamps a great way to bring your room design together, it will also help to make your task areas feel more welcoming and inviting. Multiple layers of lighting don't also have to mean lots of different lights. You can style lighting that allows for dimmer switches or touch lamps with three stages of brightness.
  • Don't just think of where to put your lighting in terms of position, but also in terms of height. Shadows and brightness levels can be altered dramatically by the change in positioning of the light fitting.

Task Lighting Around The Home:

For your living room, you'll ideally want to have three sources of light where possible. This combination of natural light, an overhead light or floor lamp and task specific lighting will help you to feel cosy when you're reading or finishing a crossword. Style wise, look for slimmer framed lights, and lamps with adjustable heads for a great reading position.

In the bedroom, consider specific reading lights and complimentary table lamps. Think about the overall design of your lighting here, as the bedroom should be a space for complete relaxation. You don't want lighting that makes the room uncomfortable to be in for a long period of time in the winter evenings. You can't rely on natural light here, so you'll need to look at the ways to add lots of layers of lighting that you can change to fit your mood or requirements.

If you have a home office space with a computer or laptop, you don’t want a bright source of light right next to the sides of your computer. Avoid having a window directly behind the screen or a bright lamp that shines directly towards you. Positioning at a home desk can be essential as poorly positioned lights can create glare on the screen and cause your eyes discomfort. Instead, have multiple low to average light sources throughout the room, and avoid complete darkness, as that can also create eye discomfort.

When it comes to finding the right lamp for the job, it's important to choose wisely. You need to create an environment which is both calming and functional, that sits comfortably within your houses existing design. Task lighting allow you to add lights to your desk space that are fit for purpose – be it studying, sewing, baking or pretty much anything else! – and here at Pagazzi you can combine functionality and cutting edge design without breaking the bank.
